Welcome to our website for Canberra Women’s Christian Convention 2010.

Lots to love about women’s convention

Love was in the air for over 500 women at the Rydges Lakeside hotel in Canberra today for the Canberra Women’s Christian Convention.
This was the second year for the now annual event. This year 530 women from different churches all over Canberra and the region came together to hear the speakers address issues close to many women’s hearts – how to find real love, and how to be a confident woman.
The theme for the day was “Real Love”, and speaker Tori Walker, from Townsville, spoke on what the bible says in 1 John about God’s love. Local pastor Michelle Philp, from Canberra’s Crossroads Church, also spoke on being a confident woman and where women could look to find true confidence.
Event manager Alison Evans believes that having a convention like this in Canberra has been a boost for women in the region, “who otherwise would have to travel to Sydney or Melbourne to attend a day like this.” Women did travel from around the region to attend, coming from places like Henty, Cooma, Berry and Batemans Bay.
Kaddi Hockley travelled from Sydney for the conference, and said she thought the day “was really uplifting with so many women coming together. The speakers were fantastic” she said, “reminding us of what love is, and of God’s great love”.
There was a local flavour to the event, with women from many different Canberra churches at the convention. Canberra radio station 1Way FM was there on the day and local IT software development company Mishme produced an animated avatar, the heart character “Lulu”, to help MC the event.
Canberra women Jen Wright and Julia Polkinghorne were interviewed and gave two different perspectives on their roles as ministry trainees in their churches, Julia as a young woman getting a taste for pastoral work before going to bible college, and Jen as a mum who has been involved in her local church and community for many years.
Although a regional event, the women were reminded to look beyond their region when they heard from Kylie Whitten who has been working in Christian ministry in Spain for many years. Kylie described Europe as “surprisingly secular”. She said the churches in Spain were very small and would be “amazed to see this many Christian women in the one place” as they were at today’s event.
Organisers are already looking forward to next year’s convention, which will be on 27 August 2011, with details on the website www.canberrachristianconventions.org.au.
