Almost 500 women attended a conference in Canberra on Saturday 19 September 2009, at the Canberra Women’s Christian Convention held at the Rydges Lakeside Hotel. This was the first time a conference like this has been held in Canberra, and it attracted women from all over the region.
As well as those travelling from the region to the convention, many Canberra women came from different churches to hear speakers Greta Gaut, from Parkes, and Lynette Nancarrow, from Canberra. The theme was “Grace is for Living”, with talks from Titus. Greta told the women there that their attitudes to God and their actions were both important. There was also a practical talk on “Why Women Worry”, which struck a chord with many women in the audience. Also speaking was Chris Platt, who spent many years in Ecuador as a missionary. She spoke about Radio Hope in South America.
One theme running through the day was the idea of older women passing on their knowledge and wisdom to younger women. Fitting nicely with this theme, one younger woman had a number of other women from her family sharing the day - Bridgette, of Canberra, came with her mother, sister, three aunts, her grandmother and her cousin’s wife!
There was a big regional presence on the day, with women travelling from country areas around Canberra. Women came from places like Parkes, Henty, Jindabyne, Cooma, Goulburn, Berry and Mittagong. Some came from Orange, including one attendee Michelle, who said she had travelled “284 kilometres to be here today”. She said “I came to hear great bible teaching and to catch up with old friends”. Michelle agreed that events like this were important for women in country and regional areas to connect with other women and to be encouraged by what the speakers had to say.
The convention attracted women from Sydney as well. One Canberra attendee, Jane, had two friends travel from Sydney for the weekend and combine their attendance at the convention with a visit to Floriade.
There was a diverse range of Christian churches represented at the convention, with women coming from Baptist, Presbyterian, Anglican, Pentecostal, Independent, Catholic and a variety of other churches. One young woman from an independent church, Kate, said she found it “very encouraging to see so many women coming together from so many different churches”. Kate said she was “very challenged by the day, and given lots of practical strategies” to live out her Christian faith.
Organisers were encouraged by the huge turn out and are planning to make it an annual event, with next year’s convention already booked for Saturday 28 August 2010. The website for the convention is www.canberrachristianconventions.org.au.
